Tresor Competition and Attempto Racing GmbH on the podium of the Joburg Kyalami 9 Hours

February 25, 2023

25.02.2023 - A third and fourth place concluded the Joburg Kyalami 9 Hour for Tresor Competition and Attempto Racing GmbH, who completed an excellent second round of the 2023 Intercontinental GT Challenge on the famous South African racetrack.

The team arrived at the event with two Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo entrusted to two PRO crews. Mattia Drudi (ITA), Ricardo Feller (CH) and Patric Niederhauser (CH) shared driving duties on the #66 car. At the same time, the #99 saw Alex Aka (GER), Dennis Marschall (GER) and Markus Winkelhock (GER) in action behind the wheel.

The free practice sessions on Thursday night made it clear that the Tresor Competition and Attempto Racing GmbH crews could play a leading role. The positive feelings, which replicated the excellent performance achieved in December during the Gulf 12 Hours in Abu Dhabi, were confirmed in qualifying.

In the three sessions that determined the pole position, the #66 car finished with the fourth-best performance, just a hair's breadth away from third place, thanks to Drudi's P3 in Q1 (1:43.383s), followed by Feller's P5 in Q2 (1:43.019s) and Niederhauser's P5 in Q3 (1:42.681s). The #99 car immediately followed in fifth place, after Winkelhock's P7 in Q1 (1:43.817s), Marschall's P3 in Q2 (1:42.804s) and Aka's P7 in Q3 (1:42.946s).

The race, which started at 1:00PM and ended at 10:00PM local time after a spectacular sunset and the last hours of night racing, was characterized by a solid performance from both crews. The #66 battled for the podium throughout all nine hours. Drudi, Feller and Niederhauser put all their determination on track and missed second place by less than two seconds, which shows to the level of competition.

The #99 car also had a positive race, finishing in fourth place. Aka, Marschall and Winkelhock immediately found a perfect harmony and a great feeling with the Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo and could have finished even closer to the front positions, but had to serve a drive-through penalty for a small error detected during one of the refuelling pit stops.

Ferdinando Geri (Team Principal):
“This has been a great performance by the whole team and the drivers, a mature race by everyone. It certainly was not easy, but after 9 hours of racing, we finished third and less than two seconds away from second place at the end of a challenge with the #33 crew that continued throughout the competition. We are more than satisfied, we have shown that we can fight for the top positions in the standings and confirmed what we achieved on the track in Abu Dhabi”.
